ASHTANGA YOGA: Jump Through to Sit
When you first learn this, it’s easier to do with bent legs, though eventually you can learn to do with straight legs too. It looks like a very muscle-y posture, but it’s more about balance than anything. When practicing, remember to keep your arms completely straight. This allows you to leverage the strength of your bones and use less muscular energy which is always a good thing.
The actual jump itself is tiny, and eventually, completely unnoticeable as your simply shift your weight from the balls of your feet into the palms of your hands and allow your legs to swing under.
DON’T RUSH THIS
When people first start learning this, they always want to go very very fast. There’s no need for that and it’s not helpful. If you can’t do it slowly, you can’t really do it anyway, so just chill out and move carefully.
Stay bendy,
Lucas Rockwood

Hi Lucas
Thanks so much for the great video. I’ve been practicing for 3 years now and have never been able to do this or find an instructor who could break it down like this.
I just tried it and it works!! You’re the best.

could the reason i have so much trouble with this move be that my hips are super tight? I can do handstands just fine, but i can’t bring my legs through without them hitting the floor. this move is my nemesis (i know i shouldn’t think that way)! i have been doing your stretches and taking the supplements for about six weeks and I am still not close to doing the jump through. Any suggestions?

Hi Amy – tight hips could be the issue. Tight hamstrings/shoulders could be too. More than that though it’s just a different movement. Handstand is very much an upper body/core strength/dynamic balance pose. Jumping through is nothing like that. Once you get the movement, you can do it on your fingertips no problem as there’s very little strength needed.
The best way to practice is NOT to go way high into handstand, but instead to practice coming forward with straight legs and trying to land with your heals as far forward as possible. Once you can land (heals-first) between your hands, you will be able to quickly learn to float through.
Hope that helps!

I’ve been eager to learn this and when I got it right I tried to do it faster then I got my hands stressed out and I’m in pain for almost 3 days. Too much won’t really do good for us. Great advice Lucas.

Kinda hard but worth a try. I think I need more time.
