Yoga for Back Pain
Quick Hip Stretch Releases Lower Back

MEDICAL NOTE: if you have severe pain, always check with your health care provider before starting any new stretching or exercise regime. Everyone’s situation is different and it’s crucial that you understand your condition before you go about treating it.

Quick Tips for Natural Back Pain Relief*:

  • A balanced stretching & strengthening routine is almost always going to be helpful
  • Nutrition can play a huge role, particularly anti-inflammatory foods & supplements
  • Very few injuries are purely physical… the mind-body element MUST be considered if you’re seeking long-term pain relief
  • Excluding common activities from your life (like bending over to pick up a pencil or raking leaves) is probably NOT the solution you need… the goal should be to regain lost range of motion, strength, and mobility
  • Muscle imbalances (one side tighter than the other, one side stronger than the other) are a huge contributor to many injuries

*The above tips are based on my own personal experiences, study, and learning after overcoming my own back pain challenges.

Jesse Cannone is the leading non-medical back pain relief expert, and I’ve learned a great deal from him specifically in terms of muscle imbalances and trigger points.

Fantastic stretch for hip flexors. Stewart McGill, one of and possibly the best back doctors, recommends not stretching for I believe one hour after waking up due to spinal disks absorbing water during sleep and therefore you could cause injury to disks. I wouldn’t recommend stretching in bed after waking up.

Interesting idea… I’m not sure gentle stretching is going to be a problem and the 1 hour time seems a bit arbitrary, but I’m sure there’s some truth there.

    Have your YOGABODY Handbook.
What do you suggest for Piriformis
    Syndrome–Sciatica?
Also do you have any alternative
    hamstring stretches?
    Thanks

You really do know your stuff. Your stretches and advice really do work. I’ve referred people with back pain after having done the road testing myself. Thanks for sharing.
