I used to have scoleosis, curvature of the spine. I have been doing yoga for 10 yrs and it has become a way of life for me. I do my own routine under a big tree by the foreshore, watching the dolphins and boats and I absolutely chill out. I used to take my shepherd with me so she had more outside time. My yoga routine is mixed with pilates to strengthen the core muscles. The outcome is that I now have a straighter spine, I am very flexible and it keeps me toned and strong. Everyone asks if I have been working out at the gym, but it is purely the result of yoga and general housework/gardening. I would be sad to not be doing yoga and wherever I go, my yoga mat goes with me on holidays. It is amazing the number of people who ask about yoga when they see you working out. They often leave all pumped up to try yoga. cheers.

@ Yaya – I’m not an expert in rehab, but for sure I would recommend a sulfur-rich supplement routine (I like YOGABODY, but of course, I’m biased:) and a very gentle but consistent stretching routine. Post operation, muscles have a tendency to seize and atrophy as you know. Love to hear how it goes… -LR

I have a question…I am currently a professional dancer so I am already very flexible, however I am soon turning 27 and I am worried that a) I will not be able to get more flexible than I am already (dancers always want to be more and more flexible) and b) that I will not be able to maintain my flexibility in the years to come. Please answer me honestly, can I further improve my fexibility even though I am almost 27 and can I maintain it using this system?
at 12:34 pm - 11th April 2010 Permalink
@Emma – flexibility is unlike strength that disappears so quickly… it’s MUCH easier to maintain flexibility long term than pretty much anything else. In fact, the only time you lose flexibility is from (1) inactivity or (2) repetitive or strength building activities without proper stretching to balance out. Many people don’t start stretching until they’re your age. You have nothing to worry about:) – LR

Help! I want to believe that I can be flexible again. Something weird is going on with my body. I’m 34, 30 lbs overweight, and I injured my piriformis a year ago while running. I have been miserable since. My legs get so tight I can hardly move. I’ve been trying to use a roller to help losen me up. I stretch quite a bit but my legs fell tight all the time. (Partly due to injured piriformis clamping on my sciatic nerve). Have you encountered this problem before? Can your program help me. I seriously feel like an 80 year old and I want my life back. I know that I sit too much with work, etc. but I have been trying to stretch and I just haven’t found the right thing yet.
Help!
at 5:17 pm - 2nd May 2010 Permalink
@Erin – thanks for writing. Are you sure it’s your piriformis? A low back or SI joint injury can do the same. But yes, for sure, stretching is essential for healing. We teach a pose called “Blaster” which is very powerful for this area. – Lucas

This is encouraging. Coffee does make me stiff. Any cooked acidic food can as well, with lasting effects up to four days. Try it after going raw for 14 days. Lucas, what % of the diet is ok eating warm to satisfy the cooked food experience for comfort. I’m allergic to wheat, all dairy, and eggs and can’t have cane sugar. I like the eating method Suzanne Somers wrote about, that meat and greens and fats go in one meal and fruits and carbs and fats go in the other meal and raw snacks inbetween. Since I don’t eat much meat, I replace with hemp protein powder, brown rice w/cooked beans and when I do eat meat, I limit only to lamb and buffalo meat. I’d rather go raw but I get too hungry for what everyone else is eating. I’m already diciplined after four years and ear troubles and allergies just eliminating wheat, milk and eggs. Help me, what do I do? I’ve tried to follow The Sun Food Diet Success System book. There are a lot of good tips in that book, like eating food that are only in season, and eating corn chips to satisfy the craving for cooked foods while in transition. I’ve also heard of eating grain soaked whole wheat kernals in hot water for 12 hours (to keep enzymes in tact) and eating it warm with agave nectar. I still need help with any other ideas. Thanks for your information. This is great!
at 8:10 am - 31st May 2010 Permalink
@ Grace – sounds like you’re doing tons of things right. % raw really depends on the person, but at least 1 full meal daily (or equivalent) is very powerful. Up to 80% is relatively easy for many people and allows you to still socialize and things which is probably just as important as food;) -LR

I’m fairly new to yoga, but I’ve been doing ballet for over 15 years now.
Flexibility has always been an issue for me, even though I stretch daily I’m nowhere near the same flexibility level as the other girls in my class and it gets really frustrating!
I ordered the yogabody naturals stretch to see if it will help improve but I’m only getting them in about 15 days.
When I start taking them, how long until I see results?
Thanks so much
at 12:54 am - 14th June 2010 Permalink
@Kassandra – thanks for writing. Flexibility comes down to how you stretch and what you eat, with very few exceptions. It’s great you have a daily habit of stretching and usually when you start applying Gravity Yoga principles to your practice you’ll see big results quickly… YOGABODY Stretch and great food are just as important. So will I have to take the supplements for the rest of my life to stay flexible once I start taking them?
at 7:40 am - 21st June 2010 Permalink
@Coco – no, nutritional support needs vary throughout your life. Some day you might find you’re lacking in calcium, another year it might be essential fats or trace minerals. YOGABODY supports the nutritional needs of yoga students, but it’s not a habit forming or performance enhancing or anything of that nature. Just gives you what you need;) – LR

In 2002 I injured my back, carring heavy photography equipment up a flight of stairs, the VA determined I had Spinal Stenosis at L4 and L5, I have been doing pilates and yoga and it has really helped, but last Nov, 2009 I was carring a 120 girl and fell on my left buttocks on a cement floor the pain went away somewhat but came back this past June after I tripped and fell on it again but on soft ground. Now it has spread from my left buttocks down to my left foot which feels like pins and needles, is this what you call sciatica?
I still attend yoga, pilates classes, water exercise, swim and hang 10 min a day upside down on an Inversion Table I bought a week ago but I still have the pain?
at 6:37 pm - 31st July 2010 Permalink
I’ve had chronic backpain for years lower back running down my right leg working seemed to agrivate it more by standing on my legs all day. (Which I thought was the problem)
I had a car accident beginning of this year and broke my sternum due to the meds I was feeling sick all the time and felt it wasn’t agreeing with the coffee I was drinking. (I stopped drinking coffee)Honestly the pain was so bad in my chest I didn’t feel backpain, but after awhile I realized the backpain was gone. I then decided not to go back on coffee and still no backpain. I have scoliosis which probably causes some pain, but then I never had pain as a kid I’m 47 now and feeling great without coffee. My father was a yoga teacher also I’d do it with him sometimes. I would like to be fit again and lose all the extra pounds after childbirth sounds like a great idea to get back into it.
