QUESTIONS FROM THE CLASS
Here’s a shortlist of some of the best questions from the class along with answers.
Gluten – The Ins and Outs? by Giota (Greece)
Q: “How does gluten interfere with our belly bacteria? And what happens to people with gluten intolerance?”
- ANSWER (Lucas): because gluten is a very common allergen (to
many different degrees), it can upset the balance of the
digestive system and make it more prone to bad bacteria
overgrowth.
Taking Probiotics 101 by Ira (USA)
Q: “What brand of probiotics do you recommend? And where do you buy them? How often should one take them? Is there an age limit or are they safe for toddlers?”
- ANSWER (Lucas): Please review Donna’s Website for products
including those for young children.
Colon Cleanse by Mary (USA)
Q: “I’ve been told that a dose of 1/2 tsp of Cayenne Pepper along with 2 Tbls of Lemon extract and 8 ounces of water is good for your colon and will assist in cleansing your digestive track. Is this true?”
- ANSWER (Lucas): Colon cleansing is a highly controversial
topic, but that aside, lemon and cayenne are both very effective
at cleansing the body. Lemon breaks up mucus, chili peppers
have anti-bacterial properties.
Garlic – Good or Bad? by Ken (UK)
Q: “Does garlic kill both good and bad bacteria?”
- ANSWER (paraphrased from Donna): Garlic is another plant with anti-microbial properties (kills bugs). It will primarily kill bad bacteria, but may kill some good bacteria too—but that’s OK. This is a normal process.
Tap Water and Your Health by Connie (USA)
Q: “How does chlorinated tap water (usually with fluoride) affect the friendly flora in the gut, and what can you do to drink the best water for your health?”
- ANSWER (paraphrased from Donna): Yes, chlorinated water can
affect microflora, so choose filtered water whenever possible.
Combining Probiotics by Teresa (USA)
Q: “Do aloe vera juice and probiotics work well together?”
- ANSWER (paraphrased from Donna): Yes, aloe vera is great for digestive health.
Probiotics for Kids by Teresa (USA)
Q: “When is the best time to take pre & probiotics (on an empty stomach, before, with, or after a meal)?”
- ANSWER (paraphrased from Donna): Taken with food, mircoflora will colonize better and have more benefits.
Probiotics and Sugar by Terry (USA)
Q: “Does sugar change the chemistry of probiotics in the gut?”
- ANSWER (paraphrased from Donna): Sugar kills of good bacteria and lead to proliferation of bad bacteria. Should be minimized.
Pasteurized Products by Chrystal (UK)
Q: “Any dairy product you buy in the store (kefir, yogurt etc) is pasteurized. Doesn’t this kill off the good bacteria? Nothing you buy in a store is live, right?”
- ANSWER (paraphrased from Donna): Anything pasteurized is dead, correct. The bacteria have done some pre-digestive work and made some nutrients more bio-available, but the bacteria themselves are now dead.
Growing Kefir by Beverly (USA)
Q: “Can kefir grains grow in other liquids besides milk?”
- ANSWER (paraphrased from Donna): Yes, coconut water kefir is a great choice.
Bottled or Fresh? by anonymous
Q: “If you take a probiotic powder (or culture starter) orally, will you get the same health benefits for the GI tract as you would by eating fermented, cultured veggies, nuts, and seeds?”
- ANSWER (paraphrased from Donna): You should make an effort to include living foods in your diet, and perhaps supplement as well.
Probiotics for Vegans by Paulette (USA)
Q: “What are the best vegan sources for probiotics? Does one have to include non-milk yogurts (which seem to be highly processed), or is there a more “natural” way to include probiotics without including milk in one’s diet?”
- ANSWER (Lucas): Non-dairy kefirs, sour kraut, fermented veggies, and nut/legume ferments are all options.
Immunity and Probiotics by Daniela (USA)
Q: “What is the relation between the immune system and probiotics?”
- ANSWER (Lucas): Microflora are vital to your immune system and do most of the heavy lifting for fighting off invaders.
Bacteria and Stomach Acid by Milisa (USA)
Q: “How do the good bacteria in fermented foods survive the acidic environment of the stomach?”
- ANSWER (Lucas): stomach acid does kill some bacteria, but as Donna taught us, a simple stool sample of anyone on a high live food diet will show that a sizable number of bacteria are alive and well through every stage of digestion. To maximize colonization, Donna suggested taking supplements with food.
