Singing Instead of Shooting People

Back to ALL Articles List

Dear Yoga Student,

If you’ve ever been to a karaoke bar, you know
that deep down, everyone has this not-so-secret
desire to be a rock star.

All it takes is half a margarita and a gentle nudge,
and next thing you know, your quiet co-worker is
singing “Thriller,” doing the zombie dance, and
blowing kisses to the crowd.

Same all over the world. Music is THE most potent
form of communication, so on some level, we all
wish we could master it.

Back to “singing instead of shooting people….”

In Thailand, there are karaoke booths in most shopping
malls near the video games, and believe it or not, singing
for an hour with a group of friends is more popular than
those machine gun war games that teenagers are usually
hooked on.

And it makes sense.

Survey any group of kids in any city in the world. Ask
them, “Would you rather be a rock star or a soldier?”
and the answer would be 9 to 1 rock star.

No doubt, the world needs soldiers too, but we wish
we didn’t. We wish everyone could just sing.

I’ve become much more aware of all the violence
in video games and entertainment as a father,
but I’ve also found it pretty easy to opt out of
the negative stuff – especially when the little one
is around.

So I’ve started listening to some pretty geeky
music with my daughter – feel good, positive
stuff – and I thought you might like it too.

Video above is D-Nick The Microphone Misfit rapping
about processed food (sounds corny, but it’s really good).

Stay bendy,

Lucas

What a wonderful idea! Living in South Africa violence is unfortunately a part of everyday life. My son was 7 when he saw me handing over my wedding ring to robbers with a gun held to my head and although that was 7 years ago it still has an influence on his life. Maybe getting some karaoke type venues into underpriviledged areas would be a very positive outlet for children dealing with violence every day, you really have me thinking now!

I have live in a country where rebels are present, I have witnessed actual firing of guns and artillery, and of course I saw wounded and dead soldiers and rebels carried by the medics. Yeah right, how I wish too that all the people in the world would really love to sing and holding microphones instead of holding deadly firearms.
Nice article you have here Lucas very touching.
