Yoga for Moms – Yoga for Dads

Dear Yoga Student,

In 2007, a little girl came into my life, and I became an instant father.

I’ve been getting up before dawn for years, so that part didn’t bother me one bit…

… but I will tell you, my practice has gotten shorter. No more 3-hour monster sessions of pranayama, asana, and meditation for me.

No sir.

Kids need attention, and my first life lesson as a dad is that you’ve got to get really smart with your time ’cause any way you slice it, the day flies by!

So here’s what I do.

I plan my day really carefully the night before. I keep a practice journal, and I write down everything I’m working on, everything I’m struggling with, and how long it’s been going on (hint: you might want to keep a practice journal yourself).

And when I get on the mat, I don’t screw around or experiment. I do the practices that I’ve been doing for years, the ones that I know work.

You can see all sorts of funky poses in Yoga Journal of women on the beach with white silk dresses in a reverse warrior triangle inversion (no idea what I just said there), but at the end of the day, that’s all just fluff.

The real practice happens all alone, when you wake up and you know you’ve got an hour or and hour and half before Sesame Street gets boring and the little one finishes her breakfast and is going to crawl on your head and tell you it’s time for school.

Kids or no kids, if it hasn’t happened to you yet, at some point, you’ll realize that you only get a few precious moments to yourself each day to grow and stretch and strengthen your spirit.

So don’t mess around, ’cause nobody wants a flabby old stiff guy as a father. Not this dad…

The Yoga of Bank Robbery

Dear Yoga Student,

When they asked the famous bank robber, Willie Sutton, why he robbed banks, he said:

“Cause that’s where the money is!”

Stupid question, but a pretty telling answer. He wasn’t robbing liquor stores because it would have been a waste time. He wanted big money.

Here’s why this matters: it’s easy to waste time looking for what you want in the wrong place. So if you don’t like your yoga teacher, find another one. If you’re bored with the style of yoga you’re practicing, try something new!

It’s your life, and you get to make the rules, but when it comes to health, flexibility, and energy, I’ve found that the “bank” lies in really simple daily activities.

Here they are:

  • 1. Most people feel REALLY healthy the more active
they are (by active, I don’t mean talking the stairs
instead of the lift… I mean, actually DOING physical
    exercise).
  •
  • 2. Most people feel REALLY healthy the more whole foods
they eat (yup, you guessed it… fruits and veggies).
  •
  • 3. Most people feel REALLY healthy when they learn to
calm their mind and detoxify their body with deep
    breathing exercises.

With everything in life, there’s a fast way and a slow way to getting what you want. The saying goes that the “tortoise wins the race” but I don’t think that’s true anymore.

Today, the people who hear a new idea and take action immediately are the ones who end up manifesting their dreams without all the yucky, boring processes that the rest of us go through.

Think about it…

The Yoga of Hard Rock

Dear Yoga Student,

Sometimes when I do yoga, I listen to loud music. Shoot me.

And one morning, I was up in the studio racticing as usual, listening to this old Modest Mouse album full blast, sweating my head off, and of course, wearing nothing but a pair of briefs.

I lost track of time.

I’d been up there for hours, and suddenly two students came walking in (early for class).

And one of them said: “That’s not yoga music!”

It was a pretty funny scene. Me in my underwear, them in their Lulu Lemon yoga gear, and Isaac Brock screaming something about “working on
living” over and over.

Ha!

Seems like everyday someone is trying to tell me what yoga IS or what yoga ISN’T. Yoga cloths and yoga beads, yoga gear and yoga nicknames -
and frankly, I don’t care!

I mean, put away the history books for a moment, and ask yourself: what is yoga really?

Stretching? Indian exercises? A spiritual practice? A cool place to meet other new age-y people?

I don’t know about you, but I have a pretty hard time defining most things in my life, and I’m not about to let anyone define my yoga practice for me.

Sorry, it’s mine.

And you know what? Enya doesn’t make yoga practice any easier than Angus Young, so if you hear “Back in Black” on full blast around 6 a.m., just do me a favor and wait outside… I’ll be done soon enough, and then we can play the harmonium and pretend that deep down we don’t all just want to scream and dance and rock out.

So I Changed My Life

Dear Yoga Student,

I’ve got something I just have to get off my chest.

In 2002, I reluctantly read my first personal growth book. It was Anthony Robbins, UNLIMITED POWER,and it changed my life.

I know what you’re thinking: “Isn’t Tony Robbins that giant guy on the infomercials in the middle of the night?”

Yup, that’s him.

Here’s what happened. I was living in Arizona at the time (high desert, dry air, lightening at night with no rain), and a close friend gave me the book.

He told me:

“Don’t talk to me again until you’ve read this book cover-to-cover.”

So I did. It took me two full days, I filled three entire notebooks with notes, and that was it really. My entire world view was flipped upside down.

An ancient proverb says, “What the mind can see, the body can do,” and six years ago in Arizona, my mind suddenly saw a world of possibility.

I saw myself with a fit, flexible body.
I saw myself financially secure and free.
I saw myself living and traveling all over the world
sharing healthy living and yoga with others.

And it all happened. And it wasn’t hard. To be honest, it’s been like sliding down a greased-up slide in the park.

So what does this have to do with you?

Well here’s the thing. I love facts and figures, science and diagrams. But the truth is, whether you want to get more flexible or find the love of your life, ain’t nothing going to happen until you get up off your ass and start doing something about it!

Sorry to be so blunt, but I don’t know how else to say this.

Take action, read books, experiment, travel, and never stop learning. Force feed yourself green foods, brainwash yourself with positive thoughts, drop down into first gear and charge up that hill!

Inertia is death to the body, and a tragedy to the soul. Fight the good fight, my friend, and transform your life today.

Ok, that’s all.

The Yoga of War (soldiers doing yoga)

Dear Yoga Student,

The U.S. army has made some radical changes in training soldiers…

… instead of distance running and situps (both of which so often lead to injuries), many training programs now incorporate yoga and Pilates-like exercises combined with sprints and interval training.

Why?

Tons of recruits are overweight, weak, and unfit (more than ever before) – and this new training regime seems to be a safer and more effective way to train.

This is one of the reasons I LOVE yoga. It’s holistic and safe, regardless of your age and entry point.

Plus, it’s really REALLY effective. So if running 12 miles with a 30 lbs rucksack each morning sounds like torture to you, never fear, do your Sun Salutes instead knowing that perhaps the U.S. Army are doing them now too (though I’m sure they do about 10x as many as you and I:)

Runner’s Yoga: “Can Yoga Students Run?”

Dear Yoga Student,

When I was a kid, my mom put my brother and me
in a crib in the middle of the track at a local high school
and did laps around us to get her daily run in…

… both my parents are lifelong runners.

But running always busted me up. Tendonitis in the
heals, shin splints, and aching arches. It was like my
body didn’t WANT to run.

Come to find out, I made some really fatal errors:

(1) I always ran with extremely “high tech” shoes
(airs, gels, arch support insoles, etc) that pretty much
guaranteed that I ran with the alignment of an angry
zombie in a horror movie.

(2) Plus, I was really too stiff to be running or doing
any other physical activity (when you can only touch
your knees in a forward bend… who are you kidding?
Stop press—stretch!)

(3) Worse still, I’d always go “jogging” instead of
running, something most our bodies don’t handle very
well (bigger discussion on that later).

The result? I quit running.

Up until a couple months ago, it had been nearly
7 years since I’d put on a pair of shorts and gone
out specifically to get my heart pounding and the
sweat dripping off my nose…

… and wow!

Have to say, it feels incredible. Shins feel great.
Heals are strong. And the shoes I’m wearing are
more like slippers.

Too early to report major progress and I’m still just
taking baby steps, but I’m researching (and running)
more and more lately; and being a yoga guy, it’s all
about running and yoga together (I like to stop halfway
in the park for a quick handstand and a cobra pose:)

At least half the yoga students I work with were
or still are runners, so when I stumbled upon a home
practice program specifically for runners, I figured
I’d interview the author and creator so you too can
learn what I’ve been learning.

So I created a “Runner’s Yoga Teleclass,” and if
you have any interest in running, I think you’ll
learn a lot here:

The Yoga of Asking Questions

Dear Yoga Student,

Asking yourself good questions is one of the
most powerful yoga practices of all…

… and there’s one question I’m obsessed with.

*QUESTION*
“If I keep doing what I’m doing now… what’s
going to happen in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years?”

“Will I be happy? Healthy? Sick? Alone? Rich?
Broke? Loved? Fulfilled?”

When I’m trying to figure out what to do with my
work, my lifestyle, or my relationships, that simple
question gives me crystal clear clarity every time.

If you’re asking about yourself, your intuition
already knows the answer.

But now let’s take that question WAY beyond you
and me, and let’s start asking bigger questions.

*LIKE THIS*
“If we keep farming the way we’re farming now…
what is going to happen in 5 years? In 50 years?”

As I’m sure you know, genetically modified seeds
are becoming a huge player in our planet’s
ecosystem. Though no one knows for sure, it
seems like that could be a very bad thing…

… and as a guy who lives off plants (me), I have
to think about where the food I eat comes from
and whether or not it’s truly a sustainable system.

OR, is the planet just sick and getting sicker.
Problems can really linger and fester, but I find
solutions strike down lightning fast.

So, I’m optimistic that if we all keep asking
questions about ourselves, our communities,
and our planet, the solution and direction
needed will indeed come.

I was reminded of the “practice of questioning”
today after I heard a very interesting interview
with “Eco-Feminist”, Dr. Shiva.

How I Healed My Hamstrings (part 2)

http://www.yogabodynaturals.com/images/hamstring.jpg

Dear Yoga Student,

My last hamstring post flooded my inbox,
Facebook, and Twitter pages with responses…

So let me get right into it and tell you how I fixed
my hamstrings (yes, I ended up pulling the left
one too).

ICE: This is helpful the first few days only. After
that, I find it totally pointless. Alternating ice/heat
is meant to increase circulation, but most of these
routines are prescribed by doctors who feel like
they need to have some advice for their patients who,
for the most part, don’t actually move except to grab
some bonbons from the freezer on commercial breaks…

… so yeah, ice it good and cold the first few days,
but after that, lose the ice.

DON’T STOP STRETCHING: Everyone I talked to
including yoga teachers told me to stop practicing
until it healed. There were two fundamental problems
with this.

(a) By that time, I was totally hooked on yoga and
hated missing even one day of practice

(b) While resting did help it heal, as soon as I’d do
anything, my hammy’s would flare up just like before

*Don’t get me wrong here. If you absolutely quit doing
anything and “lay flat” for 2 months, your hamstring
will heal. It’ll heal fast and hard and tight, but as soon
as soon as you try to use it again, it’s going to hurt.

FORGET MASSAGES: I know I’ll get hate mail for saying
this, but I’ve pulled a bunch of muscles (being stupid mostly)
and massages never helped. They’ll talk to you about
“breaking up the scar tissue” and “balancing the energy,”
but honestly, digging your thumbs into a bruised hamstring
proved counter-productive for me.

NO HOT YOGA: The heat along with stretching can make
even the most bruised-up tissues feel strong and limber.
It’s a weird thing, but if you pull your hamstring, stay out
of the heat for at least 2-4 weeks. You won’t know your
limits, and you’ll wake up in a serious world of hurt.

NO JOGGING: Jogging is pretty tough on a bruised hamstring
so don’t do it. Walking is good though.

CYCLE & SWIM: Both cycling and swimming are great
for gentling strengthening your hamstrings, and you
want to start this within a week of injury. On a bike,
just cruise around (nothing hardcore). In the pool,
get a kick board and do laps. That up/down motion
is great on the backs of the legs.

FORGET THE ‘EXPERTS’: People go to doctors looking
for quick fixes and cures, not prevention or long-term
health plans. It’s as much our fault as it is theirs,
but just remember that no ultrasound machine or
sports therapy session even comes close to a very
conscious yoga practice (at least from what I’ve seen).

POWER YOUR QUADS: Your quads (fronts of legs) are
the opposing muscles to the hamstrings, so you want
to engage them as hard as you can every time you’re
folding forward. Sometimes, it can be helpful to literally
grab your quads and squeeze them tight to feel the
strength balancing out the weakness.

BEND YOU KNEES:
With a slightly bent knee, your quads
automatically engage a little thus protecting your hamstring.
Micro-bend your knees in all your forward bends (even
if your teacher yells at you:)

HEALING TIME: It all depends on how bad it is. A small
strain might heal in 1-3 weeks, a pull could take 2-3 months,
and a true tear usually will take 6-18 months to fully heal.

Sounds depressing, I know, but if you follow the routine
above, after about 4-6 weeks, you can do everything you
did before, you’ll just “feel” your hamstring and will have
to back off to make sure you don’t go backwards with your
healing.

SUPPLEMENTS & MEDICINE: People do get steroid shots
and things, but I wouldn’t go that route. As soon as you
can, get off all painkillers as well. Supplements were really
helpful for me. Here’s what I used:

Pineapple (one whole one per day) – Very high in the enzyme
bromelain that helps inflammation and tissue regeneration.

MSM -2000-3000 mg/day (same dosage as in YOAGBODY).
Be careful as crappy brands will give you terrible gas and
bloating. In my formula, we cut it with Vit C and Greens
for maximum effect.

Vit C - 500 mg buffered so it’s easier to digest.

Green Juice – Just cause it’s always good;)

Spouted Rice Protein - This one is new to me, and very
helpful. Difficult to find, but 15-30 grams per day is great.
I’m creating a special YOGA PROTEIN formula in about 4
weeks, so I’ll give you more info then.

Yoga, like any kind of physical practice, is going to
open you up to injuries. The truth is, injuries are
really rare, and as long as you take care of yourself,
they often end up helping your body to balance itself out
in the long run.

That’s a whole other discussion we can get into later…

I’m always curious to learn new tricks. Post your
experience down below:

The Day My Hamstring Bled (pulled hamstrings)

Dear Yoga Student,

I pulled my right hamstring so badly once that it
bled under my skin.

Let me tell you the story so you learn what NOT
to do.

I used to be so stiff, I literally could not bend forward,
my back would curl up like a cat and my hands would
touch just below my knees.

Glad those days are gone.

I also didn’t know anything about stretching. I’d done
lots of running, swimming, and even some weights, but
I had no idea how stretching worked.

Ok, enough beating around the bush. Here’s what
happened:

This girl talked me into going to yoga, and she was pretty
good. I was like this big white whale dripping with sweat
and grunting like a wrestler attempting these super-basic
poses.

Not quite the image I was going for…

… and worse yet, I got so sore after my first classes,
I couldn’t walk straight. No exaggeration here, I was
limping down New York City’s streets just trying to walk
the 1/2 mile from my apartment to work.

So what did I do? I took 2 Advil.

When that didn’t help, I took 4 more. Before class that
next evening, I took 6 more. Stupid, I know, but I didn’t
want to admit that I was too swore for a little stretching…

… so I kept popping Advil, kept flopping through class like
a beached whale, and each day, I tugged on my hamstrings
with every ounce of strength I could muster.

LESSON #1: Never underestimate the
power of painkillers

I went on for weeks like this until one day, standing in line
for the shower, my teacher said, “what’s that?”

I was still spinning from class and only half-conscious so
when I saw the pool of blood gathered behind my right
knee, I figured it was just bruise or something.

“I think you should get that checked out,” he said. And
that’s when I started to wonder… could I be bleeding?
Inside?

Yup, I was. I’d torn my hamstring up so badly I had internal
bleeding, massive swelling, and constant pain for about 6
months, and then on-and-off for about a year.

The doctor’s told me to quit yoga. He told me my hamstring
was so damaged, it’d never be strong again. I fired my doctor.

A sports therapist was next. He did these ultra-sound sessions
that made it worse, so I fired my sports therapist.

My chiropractor gave me some wimpy exercises designed
for couch potatoes with 80% body fat. So I fired him too.

LESSON #2: Degree or no degree, stiff people know nothing
about flexibility

Sometimes, if you want it done right, you have to do
it yourself. I read tons of stuff about hamstrings and talked
to dancers and martial arts people to see how they healed
their hamstrings, and I figured it out.

I’ll show you how I did it in the next post…

Jesse Cannone – Book & Product Review

Back Pain Book Review

Dear Yoga Student,

Here are two most common “body ache” complaints
from yoga students:

“Ouch, my back hurts!”
or
“Youch, my hamstrings!”

And if you practice yoga long enough, at some point,
you’ll probably end up saying both those phrases.

Most of the time, the “ouch” goes away quickly. But
in some cases, no; and sometimes, it’s not even
about the yoga (yes, I’m talking about that woo-woo
psychological stuff).

Me? I royally messed up my lower back a couple years
ago being stressed out (and a little stupid, if
I’m being totally honest).

But the good news is I healed my spine naturally,
and if you or someone you care about suffers from
back pain, natural treatment might be a real option -
and in many cases, the only option!

If you can relate, there’s a book you should check
out by my new friend, Jesse Cannone. I created a

5 Things Learned from Yoga Teacher Training Courses

Dear Yoga Student,

I’m involved with half a dozen teacher training courses
each year, and every time one finishes, I’m always asking
myself (or the teaching team) the following question:

“What’s the best thing YOU learned this course?”

Here’s my shortlist:

#1 – It’s not about you, it’s about the process, the
practice, the yoga. Make a commitment and stop
making excuses.

#2 – You can’t learn passion, you’ve got to discover it.

#3 – Immersion is THE best way to learn. No question.

#4 – You never really know who you’re going to
meet and where things will lead. In yoga, in life,
every day.

#5 – Growth is universal and unstoppable… people who
embrace it usually end up with juicier lives.

Singing Instead of Shooting People

Dear Yoga Student,

If you’ve ever been to a karaoke bar, you know
that deep down, everyone has this not-so-secret
desire to be a rock star.

All it takes is half a margarita and a gentle nudge,
and next thing you know, your quiet co-worker is
singing “Thriller,” doing the zombie dance, and
blowing kisses to the crowd.

Same all over the world. Music is THE most potent
form of communication, so on some level, we all
wish we could master it.

Back to “singing instead of shooting people….”

In Thailand, there are karaoke booths in most shopping
malls near the video games, and believe it or not, singing
for an hour with a group of friends is more popular than
those machine gun war games that teenagers are usually
hooked on.

And it makes sense.

Survey any group of kids in any city in the world. Ask
them, “Would you rather be a rock star or a soldier?”
and the answer would be 9 to 1 rock star.

No doubt, the world needs soldiers too, but we wish
we didn’t. We wish everyone could just sing.

I’ve become much more aware of all the violence
in video games and entertainment as a father,
but I’ve also found it pretty easy to opt out of
the negative stuff – especially when the little one
is around.

So I’ve started listening to some pretty geeky
music with my daughter – feel good, positive
stuff – and I thought you might like it too.

Video above is D-Nick The Microphone Misfit rapping

Mentors vs. Gurus

Dear Yoga Student,

In yoga, there’s an ancient tradition of gurus and
disciples…

… you’re to search for a teacher that really
resonates with you, and then you follow him or
her with steadfast determination, trusting the
guru more than you trust yourself.

I love the idea. It’s wonderful. It would be so great
if we could all find someone to play that role in
our lives.

But it’s damn-near impossible to find someone
balanced and evolved enough to fill that role.

So for most of us, it’s much more productive
to look for mentors. A mentor doesn’t have to
be perfect, or balanced, or forever.

A mentor just needs to be someone who is a
little bit more advanced at SOMETHING than
you are (could be yoga, could be finances, could
be parenting).

And when you catch up or surpass your mentor,
that’s wonderful. You find another.

It’s not a religious relationship, it’s just a learning
relationship.

Personally, I spent many years trying to find a “guru”
in the West and then in Asia; and the day I stopped
looking for perfection and just started looking for
mentors, it was a personal revolution.

Because teachers are everywhere. Mentors are
everywhere. Some of them are downright lunatics,
but you can still learn a lot from them, and their
life doesn’t have to define yours.

So here’s the question: “Do you have a mentor?”
If not, go get one!

Sexiest Vegetarian Over 50 (actually she’s 71)

Dear Yoga Student,

I decided the other day that I’m going to live to be
122 years old.

Told my wife, and she just laughed.

But I was crunching numbers, comparing what I
want to do with the time I had to do it, and I kept
coming up short… assuming I’ll only get the usual
78 odd years.

So I gave myself an extra 44 years, and almost
immediately, 2 big things happened.

1. I suddenly started to think in terms of decades
instead of years (really fun to think like this).

AND

2. It became infinitely easier to make healthy
choices considering the road ahead is THAT long.

There are so many things you can’t control – bad
genes, nuclear fallout, planes that fall from the
sky – but self-imposed limitations are something
you can control. So why not try?

I got pretty inspired watching Mimi Kirk’s video above.
Hope you do too.

The Secret Doesn’t Work – YOGABODY

Dear Yoga Student,

Have you seen the movie, “The Secret?”

I saw it. I loved it. I think I watched it three times. It made me feel really good about my life and my dreams and my aspirations…

… but you know what? It doesn’t work!

The ideas in the movie are amazing – positive thinking, setting your intention, creative visualization, abundance mindset – but that’s not enough.

Never has been. Never will be.

Everyday, I meet bright-eyed positive thinkers who never get anything done. I mean nothing. They can’t pay their rent, they show up late to class, they don’t go to the dentist… I could go on and on, but I’ll stop!

What the world needs is NOT more dreams. We need more action takers. More people who wake up in the morning when their alarm clock goes off (instead of hitting the snooze button 4 times). We need people who eat more broccoli and less T-bone steaks. People who are serious about creating radiant health and abundance in their lives…

… people who are NOT AFRAID to actually get off the couch and do something!

You can make “dream boards” or sit around “imagining” how you’d love your body and life to be all day long. It’s fun and uplifting, but ultimately pointless until you do something.

Let me tell you a story so you get this deep down under your skin.

My first bicycle was a hard rubber-tired Schwinn red & white tank that my dad fixed up for me. It was a collector’s item to be sure, but it was not a bike that any kid in 1984 wanted to be seen riding around on.

The one I wanted was a Predator BMX with black mag wheels and a blue steel frame. My family didn’t have much back then, but instead of sitting around staring at the picture of the bike in a magazine hoping some positive thinking fairies were going to take pity on me and give me the bike of my dreams, I forced the issue.

I mowed lawns. I did chores. I cleaned cars.

It took me 9 months, but I saved up $268 dollars and I bought the damn thing myself. For cash. That, my friend, is the real “Secret.”

Suck up your pride, strap on your boots, and get to work. You want something? Great, now take some massive action and get it!

Here’s why I’m telling you all this:

I’m a really flexible guy, but it’s not magic. I found a system that worked – yoga poses, diet, nutrition – and I followed that system until I got the results I wanted.

My old body was like that hard rubber-tired Schwinn. It was OK to look at, but I sure as hell wasn’t going to ride that thing around for the rest of my life.

Now, I got my BMX…

Stay bendy,

Lucas
