Can Yoga Remove Cellulite? [free report]

Dear Yoga Student,

At 5 months, my baby son had cellulite on his legs, his
arms, and his back…

… just like most babies!

And you know what? By the time he turned 1 year old, it was all be gone. Why? Because he’ll start walking and
developing muscle tone. And muscle tone smooths cellulite
away naturally.

You might already know this, but it was certainly
news to me.

I thought cellulite was a chronic condition, something
you could never get rid of. I actually thought cellulite
was some weird bumpy type of body tissue, different
from regular fat.

None of this is true. I feel kind of silly now, but
hey, you learn something new every day.

Are You an Amateur or a Pro? [yoga student]

Dear Yoga Student,

Here’s a great quote I like to keep in mind always when
practicing feels like a struggle…

“An amateur yoga student is someone who practices when
she feels like it, practice whatever she wants or whenever she
wants. A professional student practices on purpose, even
with a headache, even when no one is watching, even when
it’s dark and cold outside.”

Doesn’t matter if you can do one armed handstands or
put your foot behind your head. At the end of the day,
no one REALLY cares anyway. The real power of yoga is
the personal practice, commitment to wellness, and your
practice of personal improvement.

When you wake up first, it’s chilly and your body feels
stiff, hopefully this will give you some “umph” to be a
pro.

CNN is Evil – Everything is OK!

Dear Yoga Student,

CNN is one of the worst things that ever happened to human happiness.

Suddenly, stories of death, struggle, and misery (the so-called “news”) were available 24/7.

Now, I know that CNN also does sports and stocks, and I’m
sure some of those things have improved the quality of our lives.
But watching, reading, and getting bombarded with negative
news stories all the time can absolutely destroy your spirit
and becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy more often than not.

During the financial crisis of 2008, everyone I know who
followed the media closely during that time lost everything.
No exceptions. And absolutely everyone I know who didn’t
watch, didn’t listen, and just went about their lives as usual
came through unscathed – or in many cases, they excelled
during those “difficult” years.

But here’s the challenge I had, and maybe you have too.

When you DON’T keep up with current events (aka tragedies),
you feel socially irresponsible, like you owe it to the world
to be constantly looking at its negative highlights in real time.

For me, here’s when I was able to break free…

In 2007. I read a book that suggested you go on a “media
diet,” basically just check out from the mainstream media
for a week.

I did it, and I felt great. So I never stopped. Aside from
the occasional 10 minutes in an airport waiting for a plane,
I don’t ever watch the news. I don’t visit news websites
unless it’s to read book reviews or for entertainment, and
I often don’t hear about major world events until a day or
even a week after they happen.

And it’s all just fine.

When you stop paying attention to all the negative hype
packaged together and sold to you as news, you automatically
start paying attention to all kinds of real news that is ultra-
relevant to you…

… like your grandma’s birthday.
… like your kids that need some attention.
… like your yoga practice that you’ve been neglecting.

And for every horrible thing you hear on the news, there
are 1000 amazing things, mind-blowing things that are
happening all around you. But you have to turn off CNN
to see them.

Hot Yoga Teacher Training – Yoga Training Thailand

Dear Yoga Student,

I just returned from one of the bi-annual yoga teacher
training
programs I produce on Koh Samui Island in
Thailand.

We had a group of 41 people form 23 countries, all
transitioning from yoga students into yoga teachers…

… it’s one of the coolest things I get to be a part of.

Here are the top 3 things I learned this time around:

#1. ENERGY
- a good yoga teacher pulls energy from
students they didn’t know they had. A good student
brings more energy to class than he takes away.

#2. BETTER YOUR BEST – the best teachers help their
students better their best. At the end of the day, the real
measure of progress in yoga is you vs. you, yesterday (or
last year), so top teachers obsess over that personal growth.

#3. NOW IS ALWAYS THE BEST TIME – the best new
teachers I’ve met start teaching as much as they can
right away. They don’t wait for everything to be perfect,
they just get started and work out the kinks as they go.

I found that insightful, hope you do too; )

The Scream Room (an alternative to yoga)

Dear Yoga Student,

As a teenager, I worked in Starbucks back when there
weren’t that many Starbucks, so the line was out the
door from 5:30 a.m. until closing.

I’ve had 51 different jobs in my life, and to be fair,
pouring coffee wasn’t a bad one…

… but after 6 or 8-hours of grind, foam, cap-it, mop
it, “get in line!” you can imagine I felt pretty fried. The
fact that I was drinking Americanos the entire time didn’t
help matters either.

And here’s the point of all this:

My boss back then, Barry, had this thing he called “The
Scream Room.” The first time he took me down to the
basement to see it, I freaked (but soon, I was hooked).

Here’s how the scream room worked:

1. If you’re feeling really stressed, overwhelmed, anxious,
or ______________ (add negative feeling here), you step
into the walk-in fridge and close the door.

2. With the door closed, you then scream as loud as you
can for a solid minute, until your throat hurts. Think about
it, you probably haven’t really screamed full-out since you
were a kid. It’s really intense.

3. Exit when you’re ready. Repeat as needed throughout
the shift.

In general, I find that people get way to intellectual about
coping strategies. Sure, there are lots of times when
doing some yoga, taking a walk, or sitting quietly in a
room is just what you need.

But let’s be honest. Sometimes, 3 hours of yoga can’t
shake a stick at just 30 seconds locked in your closet
screaming your head off.

Ever done it? I dare ya…

When Self Practice Sucks [extrovert]

Dear Yoga Student,

When people get frustrated with yoga, it’s usually
because they’re trying to do something that just
doesn’t fit with who they are.

Extroverted yoga students often struggle with
trying to maintain a self practice, while introverted
students sometimes get bored or anxious in group
classes at their local studio.

************Quick Quiz**************

Q: When you’re REALLY stressed out or burnt
out… Do you prefer to spend time alone or with
others (when you know you need to recharge)?

NOTE: “recharge” means to take care of yourself
and get your head on straight again. Both intro
and extroverts like distraction, but when you
really want to get balance back, are you with
loved ones or alone?

A: If you’re with others, you’re probably, mostly,
an extrovert. If you go hide in a cave (metaphorically
speaking), you’re probably an introvert.

Extroverts usually have a real battle with practicing
yoga on their own. Introverts will blow half a
Saturday experimenting with new poses and
stretching.

One way is not better than the other, but if
you understand your tendencies better, you
can save yourself a lot of grief and enjoy your
yoga more.

For the right person, self practice is such a
wonderful gift. For another person, the best
option is to become a lifelong member at a
local studio.

Simple enough, right? Sometimes we all forget…

15,000 Thoughts Per Day [most are reruns]

Dear Yoga Student,

Neurologists and researches estimate that we have
somewhere between 15,000-50,000 thoughts per
day.

And most of them are fear-based thoughts (how do
I avoid __ conflict?); and maybe 80% of them are
reruns, thoughts we’ve had before.

How can you really measure this? How can we
REALLY know? Well, we can’t. But just attempt
to keep track of your mind for a few minutes and
I bet you’ll find it to be true.

In yoga, they often call it the “monkey mind.” In
the office, they call it “multi-tasking.” Whatever
you call it, it’s really no fun and it’s a classic example
of less is more.

Over the years, I’ve tried just about every method
I could find to calm and focus the mind: meditation,
pranayama (yogic breathing), alpha wave music,
chanting, and prayer.

All those things work pretty well, but most people
(myself included) use them as treatments for a
crazy mind and aren’t addressing the fact that…

… there’s simply too much data coming in.

No matter where you live, it’s really easy to cut
the clutter coming into your brain each day and to
be more selective about what you get to think about.

One of the simplest ways is to stop watching or
reading the news. Personally, I unplug my phone
and keep in a dresser so it never rings. This is
extreme, but as long as you don’t mind a little
berating from friends and relatives (What? You
don’t have a TV!) it’s a really great way to reduce
your thoughts.

And when you’re thinking about less stuff, it’s
then possible that a huge chunk of your thoughts
can be positive, productive, and pleasurable.

5 Things I Learned in California

Dear Yoga Student,

California has more yoga studios per capita
than any place I know and every 5th person
is (or was) either a real estate agent, a yoga
teacher – or both!

For me, California never stops being an amazing,
frustrating and compelling part of the world for me.
Here’s what I learned my last visit:

(1) Organic food CAN be really affordable
(Trader Joe’s & local farmers’ markets offer
really great prices on really great foods)

(2) Sunshine is one of the most powerful
healing elements

(3) You can find (and eat) wild fennel on the
hiking trails on Palos Verdes Peninsula (email
me for directions if you’re going that way)

(4) Trail running is more fun and feels effortless
compared to running on concrete

(5) Not having to drive most days is a real
luxury no matter where you live

Hope your yoga practice is going well…

Trickle-Down Yoganomics

Dear Yoga Student,

Politicians talk about trickle-down economics,
but I like to talk about the trickle-down effect
of yoga.

It works like this:

You build flexibility in your hips and your
forward bends improve. You open up your back,
and your twists become deeper.

Our body and mind are forever intertwined in
this complex maze of tissue and thought;
and when we start crafting our physical and
spiritual bodies, it sets off a chain reaction
that’ll flip your world upside down.

I’m not big on philosophy, but I’m huge into
practice. And what I’ve learned is this:

Manifesters manifest. Businessmen build
empires, lovers love, dreamers dream, and yoga
people wake up early and do something that no
one else sees or cares about (for the most part)
except them.

The best students, you’ll never meet. The best
teachers never teach. This both fascinates and
depresses me all at the same time…

… because it means we have take responsibility
for everything. We have to look inside for answers
and outside for inspiration.

Not sure if that’s helpful, but I truly believe
that’s where we’re all at.

Formaldehyde, Babies & Your Face

Dear Yoga Student,

Your grandmother’s advice for skincare
products might have been something like
this:

“If it’s not good enough for a baby, it’s not
good enough for me.”

Only problem now is that even baby products
have formaldehyde, phthalates, parabens, and
sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).

Maybe those chemicals aren’t that bad, but most
people would prefer to err on the side of caution.

So what do you do?

With skincare and beauty products, you do the
same as you do with food – you simplify. Less
ingredients, nothing mysterious, and ideally
nothing with a criminal record on file with the
EPA.

With everything health, stay sane by taking
it slow. If you’re not in the mood to revamp
your shower and bathroom shelves just yet,
I totally understand.

But if you are, here’s a few things I try
to avoid

*PARABENS (preservative believed to be a
carcinogen)

*SLS (foaming agent, most concerning in
toothpaste, believed to cause canker sores)

*21-LETTER WORDS (stuff you have no
idea what it is)

It’s easy to get crazy thinking about all the
things that cause cancer in the world, but
if you’re going to rub stuff on your face,
your skull, and your body…

… you have to admit it makes sense to make
sure it’s all good, all-natural stuff. Don’t you
think?

Everything is Great & Nobody is Happy

Dear Yoga Student,

Author, Marianne Williamson, says that energetically,
fear or love is behind everything we do…

… and I completely agree.

You’re afraid of getting sick, so you start doing
yoga and jogging and eating organic foods.

*OR*

On the other side of the coin, you love life so
much you do everything you can to enjoy and
live it to its fullest (again with yoga, lifestyle
changes, or whatever lights you up).

Most of us (myself included) get scared into
taking action, but there’s a tremendous power
in doing something simply because you love
it and want to do it.

I find that NOT watching the news, avoiding
negative people (promotes fear) and trying
to appreciate the amazing time we live in
all helps.

Above is a hilarious video that puts things
in perspective…

Let’s Talk About (yoga) Stress, Baby!

Dear Yoga Student,

Here’s a note from a student:

“All this health stuff is great and all… but
honestly, I feel like most people are so
stressed out… and stress is the most toxic
thing ever…”

There’s a real truth to that, and I can certainly
relate. But here’s the thing:

YES, heady/emotional stress is bad. It really
eats away at you.

BUT, physical stress is actually great for you.

I’m not talking about smashing your hand
in a car door or getting squished by a big truck,
but safe and intense physical stresses are
actually one of the best ways to release
heady, emotional stress in your life.

EXAMPLE: A busy executive finishes a grueling
workweek and goes straight for a deep tissue
massage. She doesn’t want a bubble bath (not
yet anyway), she wants elbows digging into her
shoulders, knees into her bum, and lots of pressure.

Why?

She’ll tell you that the stronger the massage,
the more relaxed she becomes. It’s a good stress,
bad stress thing.

So why does this matter?

Simply because sometimes you’ve got to rev
up before we can cool down. Do something
physically difficult and uncomfortable before
you’re truly ready to lounge on the sofa and
veg out.

Here are my favorite physical stress activities
that blast emotional stress away fast:

* Backbends (50 breaths in full wheel)

* 8×15 Plank Press Ups in 4 Minutes
(Yoga Timer is very handy for this)

* Factorial Pullups on the Yoga Trapeze
(Start with your max number reps and
decrease by one each set… so 10 first set,
9 second set, etc).

* Kapalabhati Breathing
(5 sets of 20 exhales)

Hope you find that helpful…

Dear Yoga Student,

One of the best things about being a student of yoga
is the student part. The constant learning, exploration,
curiosity, and creativity.

Doing it Your Own Way Stinks (yoga students)

Dear Yoga Student,

For most people, their best quality is also their worst. Let me show you what I mean.

I’ve always been a one-man show doing everything on my own terms for as long as I can remember. In some ways, it’s done me a lot of good.

But in other ways, it’s been an idiotic waste of time.

When I was a kid, I used to spend hours trying to “invent” a pizza dough recipe in the kitchen when there were dozens of great recipes to be had in any bookstore.

I used to try to fix my motorcycle without reading any manuals – just twisting screws and yanking on cables.

And the amount of times I’ve screwed up my computer… let’s not even go there!

Then I found yoga.

My first teacher was a noodle of guy about 6 1/2 feet tall, and whenever I did anything even slightly off, he’d get right up next to my ear and growl:

“Stop messing around and do it like I told you!”

As stupid as it is, I don’t like people telling me what to do. Fundamentally, I just don’t like it. How stupid is that?

People have been doing yoga for a zillion years, and yet I thought I could figure it out on my own! Surprise surprise, I was a complete wreck!

Back then, it was hard for me to focus my eyes on one point, breathe through my nose and press my hands together above my head all at the
same time (I’m not making this up).

More than once, I feinted in class, and the morning-after, I’d walk to work with a limp.

I put up a good bull-headed fight, but eventually, Noodleman beat my independence out of me and opened me up to a whole new world…

… a world where I could piggy-back on the work of other people and move ahead 10x or even 20x as fast – at anything!

In the yoga scene, people are always looking for gurus and sages to follow, but I was just looking for teachers of any kind, and I looked everywhere!

Yoga geeks in the park. Nutrition nerds at health food stores. Fitness buffs in the gym.

I didn’t care then, and I don’t care now who I learn from (as long as they’re good). I just love to learn.

One of my daily mantras became this: “I don’t know Jack, so today, I’m going to find someone who does.” (very spiritual, eh?)

Where I’m going with this is that my best quality, my independence and obsessive nature is also my worst. And your best quality is probably stinks sometimes too.

Think about it.

Two Guys, One Fly, Some Dirt

Dear Student,

Imagine a guy sitting under an apple tree trying to relax, but flies keep landing on his nose. He swats 7 of them dead, but there’s one he just can’t get… and it ruins his afternoon.

Same tree, same fly, 2 days later, different guy. The fly lands on this new guy’s nose, but this guy just sits there, staring at the fly, scheming.

Same tree, same fly, 2 days later. Guy number one is still swatting at the fly, hot and bothered, but guy number two has rubbed mud all over himself and is smiling like an idiot through clay-crusted lips because the fly doesn’t want anything to do with him anymore.

Here’s the moral:

Kids are No Good at Yoga (not yet)

Dear Yoga Student,

Kids are no good at yoga.

They can’t sit still, their bodies are like noodles, and they’d much rather being throwing rocks at passing cars than trying to twist themselves into funny shapes.

But here’s what kids ARE good at: trying something new. Their whole life is about diving into the unknown!

The other day, I was watching this cheesy movie with my daughter about street dancers in Baltimore, and without even thinking, she started break dancing!

She tried to do a handstand, stall on her elbows, and kick from bridge to standing. She couldn’t really do it, but you know what?

She wasn’t that far off!

When it comes to body awareness and coordination, young children really just don’t have much of it. But that doesn’t stop them from sucking up knowledge like a Hoover – and not from books, or hours of planning, or years of dreaming…

… they just try it! And then they cry.

And then try it again, and again, and again until they get old enough to start worrying what other people think.

And that’s when it becomes pure torture just to drop down into a simple pose like the full frontal splits!

Kids are cool, and because they KNOW that they don’t know much, that’s why they can learn and change and grow more in a couple days than you or I can in an entire year.

I swear, last weekend, I saw brain cells multiplying right before my eyes. Handstand, handstand! Do it again!

Gotta love that.

Yoga for Moms – Yoga for Dads

Dear Yoga Student,

In 2007, a little girl came into my life, and I became an instant father.

I’ve been getting up before dawn for years, so that part didn’t bother me one bit…

… but I will tell you, my practice has gotten shorter. No more 3-hour monster sessions of pranayama, asana, and meditation for me.

No sir.

Kids need attention, and my first life lesson as a dad is that you’ve got to get really smart with your time ’cause any way you slice it, the day flies by!

So here’s what I do.

I plan my day really carefully the night before. I keep a practice journal, and I write down everything I’m working on, everything I’m struggling with, and how long it’s been going on (hint: you might want to keep a practice journal yourself).

And when I get on the mat, I don’t screw around or experiment. I do the practices that I’ve been doing for years, the ones that I know work.

You can see all sorts of funky poses in Yoga Journal of women on the beach with white silk dresses in a reverse warrior triangle inversion (no idea what I just said there), but at the end of the day, that’s all just fluff.

The real practice happens all alone, when you wake up and you know you’ve got an hour or and hour and half before Sesame Street gets boring and the little one finishes her breakfast and is going to crawl on your head and tell you it’s time for school.

Kids or no kids, if it hasn’t happened to you yet, at some point, you’ll realize that you only get a few precious moments to yourself each day to grow and stretch and strengthen your spirit.

So don’t mess around, ’cause nobody wants a flabby old stiff guy as a father. Not this dad…

The Yoga of Bank Robbery

Dear Yoga Student,

When they asked the famous bank robber, Willie Sutton, why he robbed banks, he said:

“Cause that’s where the money is!”

Stupid question, but a pretty telling answer. He wasn’t robbing liquor stores because it would have been a waste time. He wanted big money.

Here’s why this matters: it’s easy to waste time looking for what you want in the wrong place. So if you don’t like your yoga teacher, find another one. If you’re bored with the style of yoga you’re practicing, try something new!

It’s your life, and you get to make the rules, but when it comes to health, flexibility, and energy, I’ve found that the “bank” lies in really simple daily activities.

Here they are:

  • 1. Most people feel REALLY healthy the more active
they are (by active, I don’t mean talking the stairs
instead of the lift… I mean, actually DOING physical
    exercise).
  •
  • 2. Most people feel REALLY healthy the more whole foods
they eat (yup, you guessed it… fruits and veggies).
  •
  • 3. Most people feel REALLY healthy when they learn to
calm their mind and detoxify their body with deep
    breathing exercises.

With everything in life, there’s a fast way and a slow way to getting what you want. The saying goes that the “tortoise wins the race” but I don’t think that’s true anymore.

Today, the people who hear a new idea and take action immediately are the ones who end up manifesting their dreams without all the yucky, boring processes that the rest of us go through.
